AAMC Nominating Committee Elections

The AAMC Nominating Committee deliberates throughout the year to develop a slate of candidates for the Board of Governors and fill any vacancies that may arise. Committee members review nominees with the goal of putting forward candidates who bring important and complementary experience to the Board. The Nominating Committee's recommendations are subject to final approval by the Board of Governors.

To develop a diverse slate, while keeping in mind the Board's present composition and the AAMC's future needs, the committee considers applicant’s attributes such as:

  • A broad concern for the AAMC and the legacy of Mills College as a whole

  • A commitment to invest the time and energy needed for effective service

  • A willingness to understand and work with complex organizations and challenges

  • Leadership and consensus-building skills

  • Experience on boards or in professional areas important to the AAMC's needs

  • An interest in and concern for higher education

After its deliberations, the Nominating Committee presents its recommended slate to the Board of Governors for approval.

DETAILS

Nominating Committee members are elected through an election open to all AAMC members. Members serve one-year terms, with a maximum of two consecutive terms.

The committee consists of seven members: three from the Board of Governors (including the Chair) and four at-large members elected from the general membership. Three alternates are also chosen to address potential vacancies — one from the Board and two at-large. Eligible candidates include all Mills College alumnae who attended at least one semester.

In practice, serving on the Nominating Committee involves approximately six meetings over the course of the year, primarily conducted via Zoom, plus asynchronous review of candidate materials. The time commitment is meaningful but manageable, and the work has direct impact on the future of the organization.

⚠ Important: Members elected to the Nominating Committee are not eligible to run for the Board of Governors in the following term. Please keep this in mind before applying.

NOTE: Voting will take place over the course of several days via electronic ballot (paper ballot available upon request). Results will be announced via email prior to the Annual Meeting in June.
