AAMC Travel Programs FAQ - 2024
Does the trip price include airfare?
Airfare or other travel to and from the destination and departure locations are not included, but many travel companies offer assistance in making arrangements that include transfers to/from the airport, or you can make your own plans and pay to be picked up upon arrival and returned for the trip home.
Should I get travel insurance?
AAMC and our travel partners strongly recommend that you have general travel insurance for every trip. AHI provides insurance (AHI Travel Assurance) for every passenger, and there are many other options, such as AAA, Travel Guard, Travel Insured International, Travel Safe, or USI Affinity Travel Insurance Services. Some credit cards offer comprehensive travel insurance as a benefit if you pay for any part of the trip with that card.
Should I get travel medical insurance?
AAMC and our travel partners strongly recommend that you have travel medical insurance for every trip. AHI’s Travel Assurance includes basic medical emergency coverage, and many of the companies listed above also provide this specialized insurance, or it may be a benefit of other organizations in which you are a member.
How can I start learning about the country I will visit?
You may receive a resource reading list from the travel company before your trip that will introduce you to the country and its cultures. You can also do your own research and talk to friends who have already visited or lived there.
Another recommended resource is 101+ Tips for Solo Women Travelers, produced by Overseas Adventure Travel. You can download it, or you can request a complimentary hard copy.
Why are AAMC trips so expensive?
Traveling with the AAMC’s travel partners takes the guesswork, uncertainty, and stress out of booking your trip. All the planning, bookings and logistics are handled by the travel partner’s teams of destination experts, including: designing itineraries with bilingual or multilingual in-country tour directors; booking comfortable, saf accommodations in hotels on land and/or quarters on cruise ships; arranging all in-country transportation and baggage transport; arranging meals at interesting restaurants, private homes, or on board your ship; paying entrance fees for select tour attractions; and paying most gratuities. While round-trip airfare from the U.S. is not included in the price of most trips, travel partner staff is available to assist you in planning how to get to and from your trip’s beginning and end.
What commission does AAMC receive through the travel program?
Commissions vary, but currently AAMC receives approximately 5% of the price/traveler.
Are there single passenger supplements on AAMC trips?
Companies charge additional fees which vary by the trip, but some companies may waive the supplement to attract more solo travelers.
