The Board of Governors’ Antiracism Statement
February 17, 2021
Founded in 1879, the Alumnae Association of Mills College (AAMC) is an independent, diverse and inclusive community of more than 25,000 graduates, worldwide. The Board of Governors is the managing body of the AAMC. Mills College is known for its social justice mission of which racial justice is a critical element.
The Board of Governors of the AAMC supports the pledge of Mills College and its Board of Trustees to be antiracist, and we join them in continuing to educate our respective constituents. This commitment calls for consciously taking responsibility to advance fair non-discriminatory policies and practices that reflect our long-standing principles of diversity, equity and inclusion.
The Board of Governors recognizes that racism dehumanizes everyone, and over the past three decades, the AAMC’s Alumnae of Color Committee has led the way toward furthering diversity, equity, inclusion, and racial justice within the Board of Governors, the Board of Trustees, the alumnae community, and the college. Following this example, we pledge to actively work against unconscious bias, explicit and implicit racism, injustice, and discrimination in the advancement of true equity, to create spaces for sincere dialogue and growth, and champion a culture where bigotry and racism are not tolerated. We will progress toward these goals by holding ourselves accountable for ensuring inclusive Board practices, protocols, composition and actions, and reviewing, assessing, and modifying any relevant initiatives, policies, and practices that do not advance diversity, equity and inclusion.
