Mills College Financial Health Analysis:
A Different Perspective

According to Dr. Matt Hendricks, Chair of Economics at the University of Tulsa, Mills is financially sound, and is, in fact, one of the richest schools in the country for its size. He says Mills College does not have a wealth problem, it has a spending problem.

The AAMC shares Dr. Hendricks’ presentation and data so alums may review the information and draw their own conclusions about its findings, which aligns with the AAMC’s call for transparency and to explore all options since the College’s March 17, 2021 announcement.

Dr. Hendricks has given permission to share his analysis with all Mills College stakeholders. We are grateful to him for volunteering his time and energy.

Dr. Hendricks Town Hall #1

In this November 20, 2021 town hall, Dr. Hendricks presents a thorough, independent analysis of Mills’ finances and how Mills compares to similar colleges across the US (including Northeastern). He uncovers some of Mills’ systemic problems and shares solutions.

Dr. Hendricks Town Hall #2

In this second town hall on December 4, 2021, Dr. Hendricks takes a deeper look at Northeastern University’s financial health relative to its peers and to Mills – and explores Northeastern’s almost total dependence on high-tuition and international students for its revenue.

IPEDS Dashboard

Dr. Hendricks utilizes the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) dashboard in this presentation. IPEDS is a system of interrelated surveys conducted annually by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics.

The Mills IPEDS dashboard enables comparative analysis. You can compare Mills to peers over select years. Be sure to deselect Northeastern from the list at the top, because it is not a small-college peer and thus skews the results. Northeastern is included only for direct comparison to Mills across relevant parameters such as spending, endowment-per-student ratios, etc.Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
